Chapter 7 Srimad Bhagavad Gita

Chapter 7
Gnyaana Vignyaana Yoga

The Yoga of Wisdom and Realisation

7:01
Sri Bhagavaan uvaacha:
mayyaa-sakta manaah paartha
yogam yunjan-madaashrayaha
asamshayam samagram maam
yathaa jnaasyasi tacchruNu (SBG 7:01)

Shri Bhagavan Krishna said:
O Arjuna, listen how, with your mind intent on Me, taking refuge in Me, and practising Yoga, you will, free from doubt, know Me completely.
——————————
7:02
jnaanam te’ham savijnaanam-
idam vakshyaam-yasheshataha
yajjnaatvaa neha bhooyo’nyaj-
jnaatavyama-vashishyate (SBG 7:02)

I will now clearly explain to you this phenomenal knowledge and also its realisation after which, there will be nothing further remaining to be known in the world.
——————————
7:03
manush-yaaNaam sahasreshu
kash-chi-dyatati siddhaye
yatataa-mapi siddhaa-naam
kash-chinmaam vetti tattvataha (SBG 7:03)

Out of thousands of men, hardly one tries to achieve perfection in Self-realisation and among those trying so hard to do so, there is hardly one who achieves perfection in Self-realisation and among those who do achieve Self-realisation, there is hardly one who truly knows Me.
——————————
7:04
bhoomiraapo’nalo vaayuhu
kham mano buddhireva cha
ahamkaara iteeyam me
bhinnaa prakruti-rashta-dhaa (SBG 7:04)

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and ego together, are eight divisions of My Nature.
——————————
7:05
apare-yamita-stvanyaam
prakritim viddhi me paraam
jeeva-bhootaam mahaabaaho
yayedam dhaaryate jagat (SBG 7:05)

Apart from this lower energy of Mine, you should know My Jiva Shakti which is another energy of Mine. It is superior to this, is the principle of life and sustains all living beings in the material world.
——————————
7:06
etadhyo neeni bhootaani
sarvaaNee tyupa dhaaraya
aham kritsnasya jagatah
prabhavah pralayas-tathaa (SBG 7:06)

You must know that all living things are manifested in these two energies of Mine. I am the source of their manifestation and also their dissolution.
——————————
7:07
mattah parataram naan-yat-
kinchidasti dhananjaya
mayi sarvamidam protam
sootre maNi-gaNaa iva (SBG 7:07)

Beyond Me, there is nothing superior. Everything is connected to Me like pearls on a thread.
——————————
7:08
raso’hamapsu kaunteya
prabhaasmi shashi sooryayoho
praNavah sarva vedeshu
shabdah khe paurusham nrushu (SBG 7:08)

I am the sweet flavour in water, the radiant light of the moon and the sun, the primordial root syllable AUM in the Vedas, the subsonic element of the sound of the ether and the valour in humans.
——————————
7:09
puNyo gandhah prithivyaam cha
tejas chaasmi vibhaavasau
jeevanam sarva bhooteshu
tapas chaasmi tapasvishu (SBG 7:09)

I am also the fragrance of the earth as well as the heat of fire, the vitality of all living beings and also the tolerance in people who practise austerities.
——————————
7:10
beejam maam sarva bhootaanaam
viddhi paartha sanaatanam
buddhir-buddhi-mataa-masmi
tejaste-jasvinaa-maham (SBG 7:10)

Arjuna, know that I am the origin of all living beings, the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendour of the powerful.
——————————
7:11
balam balavataam chaaham
kaama-raaga-vivarjitam
dharmaa-viruddho bhooteshu
kaamo’smi bharatar-shabha (SBG 7:11)

I am the strength of the strong who are uncorrupted by desire and attachment; and in all living beings, I am the energy of procreation which is not against righteousness.
——————————
7:12
ye chaiva saattvikaa bhaavaa
raajasaas-taamasaash-cha ye
matta eveti taan-viddhi
na tvaham teshu te mayi (SBG 7:12)

Whatever manifestations there are of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, they have all come from Me. However, I am not in them but they are in Me.
——————————
7:13
tribhir-guNa-mayair-bhaavai-
re-bhih sarva-midam jagat
mohitam naabhi-jaanaati
maame-bhyah paramav-yayam (SBG 7:13)

The entire universe is deluded by the three Gunas of Prakriti not knowing Me as being situated above them and as the immutable Supreme.
——————————
7:14
daivee hyeshaa guNamayee
mama maayaa durat-yayaa
maameva ye prapadyante
maayaa metaam taranti te (SBG 7:14)

My Divine Maya with the three Gunas of Prakriti, is definitely very difficult to overcome without knowing Me as being situated above them as the immutable Supreme. But only those who take refuge in Me will be able to overcome this illusory energy or Maya.
——————————
7:15
na maam dushkritino mood-haah
prapadyante naraadhamaaha
maaya-yaapa-hrita-jnaanaa
aasuram bhaavam-aashritaaha (SBG 7:15)

Those who are depraved commit evil, are foolish and are not devoted to Me. Their minds are controlled by this illusory energy Maya and their discrimination is degraded by this.
——————————
7:16
chatur vidhaa bhajante maam
janaah sukritino’rjuna
aarto jijnaa-surartharthee
jnaanee cha bharatar-shabha (SBG 7:16)

Among the pious there are four kinds who are devoted to me. They are the distressed, those seeking knowledge, people desiring material gain and people of wisdom.
——————————
7:17
teshaam jnaanee nitya yukta
eka bhaktir vishishyate
priyo hi jnaanino’tyartha-
maham sa cha mamap-priyaha (SBG 7:17)

Of those, the one of wisdom who is engaged in devotional service is the best. I am dear to such a knower and he or she in turn is dear to Me.
——————————
7:18
udaaraah sarva evaite
jnaanee tvaat-maiva me matam
aasthitah sa hi yuktaatmaa
maame vaan-uttamaam gatim (SBG 7:18)

While I consider every devotee to be virtuous, I regard the self-realised devotee as My own Self because his mind is fully focused on attaining Me as his ultimate goal.
——————————
7:19
bahoonaam janma naamante
jnaana-vaan-maam prapadyate
vaasudevah sarvamiti
sa mahaatmaa sudur-labhaha (SBG 7:19)

Therefore after innumerable births, the one who has perfected his or her wisdom, understanding fully My universal reality, surrenders to Me and such a soul is very rare.
——————————
7:20
kaamai-stai-stair-hritajnaa
naah prapadyante ’nyadevataaha
tam tam niyama maasthaaya
prakrityaa niyataah svayaa (SBG 7:20)

Due to various desires, those deprived of knowledge and driven by their own particular nature, surrender themselves to the deities and they adapt themselves to their corresponding rites and rituals.
——————————
7:21
yo yo yaam yaam tanum bhaktah
shraddha-yaarchitu-micchati
tasya tasyaa-chalaam shraddhaam
taameva vidadhaam-yaham (SBG 7:21)

Whatever celestial form one desires to worship, I surely sustain that faith in them.
——————————
7:22
sa tayaa shraddhayaa yuktas-
tasyaaraa-dhana-meehate
labhate cha tatah kaamaan
mayaiva vihitaan-hi-taan (SBG 7:22)

Endowed with firm faith of that deity and sanctioned only by Me, a devotee obtains all that he desires from that deity.
——————————
7:23
antavattu phalam teshaam
tadbha-vatyal-pamedhasaam
devaan-deva-yajo yaanti
madbhaktaa yaanti maamapi (SBG 7:23)

The results of insufficient understanding are always temporary. A devotee of a deity obtains the deity, but My devotee obtains Me.
——————————

7:24

avyaktam vyakti-maapannam

manyante maam-abuddhayaha

param bhaava-majaa-nanto

mamaa-vyayaman-uttamam

(SBG 7:24)

Foolish people who do not know My formless, exalted, imperishable, and supreme nature think I assume a manifest human form.

——————————

7:25
naaham prakaashah sarvasya
yoga-maayaa samaavritaha
mood-ho’yam naabhijaa naati
loko maama-jama-vyayam (SBG 7:25)

I am not manifest to everyone who is veiled by My Yogamaaya energy. The foolish and ignorant cannot understand Me to be imperishable and without birth.

——————————

7:26
vedaaham samatee-taani
vartamaa-naani chaarjuna
bhavishyaaNi cha bhootani
maam tu veda na kash-chana (SBG 7:26)

O Arjuna, I know all the past, the present and the future of all living beings, but nobody really knows Me.

——————————

7:27
icchaa-dvesha-samutthena
dvandva-mohena bhaarata
sarva-bhootaani sammoham
sarge yaanti parantapa (SBG 7:27)

By the illusion of duality that arose from desire and aversion, all forms of life from the beginning are in delusion.

——————————

7:28
yeshaam tvanta-gatam paapam
janaanaam puNya-karmaNaam
te dvandva-mohanir-muktaa
bhajante maam drid-havrataaha (SBG 7:28)

But those whose sins are completely eradicated by performing virtuous deeds, are free from the delusion of duality and they engage with dedication in devotional service unto Me.

——————————

7:29
jaraa-maraNa-mokshaaya
maamaa-shritya yatanti ye
te brahma tadviduh kritsnam-
adhyaatmam karma chaakhilam (SBG 7:29)

Those who strive to be freed from old age and death, take shelter in Me. Such people come to know Brahman, the embodied Self and the law of action and reaction.

——————————

7:30
saadhi-bhootaadhi-daivam maam
saadhi-yajnam cha ye viduhu
prayaaNa-kaale’pi cha maam
te vidur-yukta-chetasaha (SBG 7:30)

Those who know Me the ultimate principle of phenomenal existence, as the underlying foundation of all deities and the One who sustains the performance of all sacrifices, with their minds absorbed in Me, can know Me even at the moment of death.

Thus ends the seventh part of the Bhagavad Gita
The Yoga of Wisdom and Realisation
-The Science of the Eternal, the Scripture of Yoga,
the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.
