Devasura Sampad Vibhaaga Yoga

The Yoga of the distinction between Divine and Demoniacal qualities

 16:01

Shri Bhagavaan uvaacha:
abhayam sattva-sam-shuddhir-
jnaana-yoga-vyavasthitihi
daanam damash-cha yajnash-cha
svaadhyaa-yastapa aarjavam
(SBG 16:01)

Shri Bhagavan Krishna said:
Fearlessness, purity of the mind or Sattva, perseverance in the Yoga of knowledge, charity, controlling of the senses, performing sacrifice, studying of scriptures, practising austerity and straightforwardness,

(SBG 16:02)

…practising non violence, truthfulness, giving up anger, renunciation, peacefulness, the absence of greed, compassion towards other beings, being free from desire, gentleness, modesty, prudence,

tejah kshamaa dhritihi shaucha-

bhavanti sampadam daiveem-
abhijaatasya bhaarata
(SBG 16:03)

…splendour, patience, determination, purity, benevolence and the absence of arrogance; all these are saintly qualities of one born in a divine state, O Arjuna!
——————————
16:04

dambho darpo’bhimaa-nash-cha
krodhah-paarushya-meva cha
ajnaanam chaabhi-jaatasya
paartha sampadam-aasureem
(SBG 16:04)

Fraud, impudence, arrogance, rage and rudeness, as well as ignorance are qualities possessed by the one born in a demoniacal state, O Arjuna.

——————————
16:05

daivee sampad vimokshaaya
nibandhaa-yaasuree mataa
maa shuchah sampadam daiveem-
abhijaato’si paandava
(SBG 16:05)

Divine qualities lead a person towards liberation while demoniacal qualities cause bondage. Do not worry, O Arjuna, because you were born with divine qualities!
——————————
16:06

dvau bhootasargau loke’smin-
daiva aasura eva cha
daivo vistara-shaha proktah
aasuram paartha me shruNu
(SBG 16:06)

There are two kinds of beings in this world – people endowed with divine qualities and those with a demoniacal nature. The Divine qualities have been described by Me in detail. I shall now explain to you about people with demoniacal qualities.
——————————
16:07
pravrittim cha nivrittim cha
janaa na viduraa-suraaha
na shaucham naapi chaachaaro
na satyam teshu vidhyate
(SBG 16:07)

Those with a demoniacal nature do not understand what to do and what to refrain from doing. They don’t have purity, right conduct or truthfulness.
——————————
16:08

asatyama-pratisht-ham te
jagadaa-hura-neeshvaram
aparas-para-sambhootam
kimanyat-kaama-haitukam
(SBG 16:08)

Such people say that the universe is without truth, without a moral basis and without God. They also say that it has been brought about by the union of two people from opposite genders, with lust being the cause.
——————————
16:09

etaam drishti-mavash-tabhya
nashtaat-maano’lpa-buddhayaha
prabha-vantyugra-karmaaNaha
kshayaaya jagato’hitaaha
(SBG 16:09)

Clinging to such views, these ruined souls with poor intellect and cruel deeds, arise as enemies of the world and threaten to cause its destruction.
——————————
16:10

dhambha-maana-madaan-vitaaha
mohaad-gruheet-vaasad-graahaan-
pravartante-’shuchi-vrataaha
(SBG 16:10)

Carrying insatiable lust; and being full of hypocrisy, pride and arrogance; the demoniacal hold on to their evil ideas. They are deluded and through their delusion, they work with impure thoughts.
——————————
16:11

chintaa-mapari-meyaam cha
pralayaan-taamu-paashritaaha
kaamo-pabhoga-paramaa
etaavaditi nish-chitaaha
(SBG 16:11)

They are dominated by fears and anxieties of which death is the only ending and yet they regard gratification of lust as their highest goal. They amass wealth for the sole purpose of gratifying their senses.

16:12

aashaa-paasha-shatair-baddhaah
kaama krodha paraayaNaaha
eehante kaama bhogaartham-
anyaa-yenaartha-sanchayaan
(SBG 16:12)

Being bound by hundreds of ropes of desire, and driven by lust, greed and anger, they strive to amass wealth using all possible unjust and unrighteous means with the main aim of satisfying their desires.
——————————
16:13

idamadya mayaa labdham-

idam-astee-damapi me

(SBG 16:13)

“I have achieved this today and I shall fulfill my other desires too. I possess this and in the future, I shall possess even more wealth.”
——————————
16:14

asau mayaa hatah shatrur-

(SBG 16:14)

“That rival has been destroyed by me and others too I shall destroy. I am God. I am the one who enjoys everything. I am successful, powerful and happy.”
——————————
16:15

aad-hyo’bhijana-vaanasmi
ko’nyosti sadrusho mayaa
yakshye daasyaami modishya
itya-jnaana-vimohitaaha
(SBG 16:15)

“I am affluent and have powerful relatives. Who else can be equal to me? I will perform sacrifices to the deities, give alms, and make merry!” – This is how the demoniacal who are deluded by ignorance, speak.
——————————
16:16

aneka-chitta-vibhraantaa
moha-jaala-samaa-vrutaaha
prasaktaah kaama-bhogeshu
patanti narake’shuchau
(SBG 16:16)

Confused by countless thoughts, entangled in a web of delusion, and addicted to the gratification of lust and greed, they fall into a dirty hell.
——————————
16:17

aatma-sambhaa-vitaah stabdhaa
dhana-maana-madaan-vitaaha
yajante naama-yajnaiste
dambhe-naavidhi-poorvakam
(SBG 16:17)

Such narcissistic, arrogant, ostentatious and perverse people intoxicated with the pride of their worldly possessions, perform hypocritical acts of sacrifice which disregard scriptural principles.
————————————————
16:18

ahankaaram balam darpam
kaamam krodham cha samshritaaha
maamaat-mapara-deheshu
pradvishanto’bhyasooyakaaha
(SBG 16:18)

Being blinded by egotism, power, arrogance, greed and anger, these demoniacal people hate Me in their own bodies and also in those of others.
——————————
16:19

taanaham dvisha-tah krooraan-
samsaareshu naraa-dhamaan
kshipaa-myajasram-ashubhaan-
aasur-eeshveva yonishu
(SBG 16:19)

These vile, reproachful, vicious and cruel haters are the worst among humans and I throw them into demoniacal wombs life after life, in the cycle of life and death in the material world.
——————————
16:20

aasureem yoni-maapannaa
mood-haa janmani janmani
maama praapyaiva kaunteya
tato yaantya-dhamaam gatim
(SBG 16:20)

Taking birth in demoniacal wombs birth after birth, these deluded people never attain Me but fall deeper and deeper into conditions darker and murkier than ever.
——————————

16:21

trividham narakasyedam
dvaaram naashana-maat-manaha
kaamah krodhas-tathaa lobhas-
tasmaad-etat-trayam tyajet
(SBG 16:21)

There are three gates to the hell of destroying oneself – they are lust, anger, and greed. These three should therefore be given up.
——————————
16:22
etair-vimuktah kaunteya
tamo-dvaarai-stribhir-naraha
aachara-tyaat-manah shreyas-
tato yaati paraam gatim
(SBG 16:22)

When liberated from the three gates of hell, one strives for Self-realisation and thus attains the ultimate goal.
——————————
16:23
yah shaastra-vidhi-mutsrujya
vartate kaama kaarataha
na sa siddhi-mavaapnoti
na sukham na paraam gatim
(SBG 16:23)

A person who disregards the teachings of the scriptures and acts under the influence of desire, attains neither perfection, happiness nor the Supreme goal.
——————————
16:24
tasmaach-chaastram pramaaNam te
kaaryaa-kaarya-vyavasthitau
jnaatvaa-shaastra-vidhaanoktam
karma kartumi-haarhasi
(SBG 16:24)

Therefore, let the scriptures be the authority and guide to let you know what you should do and what you should not do. Acquire knowledge from the teachings of the scriptures. Live and work according to that knowledge here in this world.

Thus ends the sixteenth part of the Bhagavad Gita
“ The Yoga of the distinction between Divine and Demoniacal qualities”
-The Science of the Eternal, the Scripture of Yoga,
the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.
