Purushottama Yoga

The Yoga of The Supreme Spirit

15:01
Sri Bhagavaan uvaacha:
oordhva-moolam-adhah-shaakham-
ashvattham-praahu-ravyayam
cchandaamsi yasya parNaani
yastam veda sa vedavit (SBG 15:01)

Shri Bhagavan Krishna said:
The wise speak of the banyan tree, which has its roots above and branches below, and the leaves of which are the Vedas. He who knows it is a knower of the Vedas.
——————————
15:02

guNa-pravruddhaa vishaya-pravaalaaha
adhash-cha moolaanya-nusanta-taani
karmaanu-bandheeni manushya-loke (SBG 15:02)

Its branches are covered with budding shoots that are sense objects and are nourished by the Gunas. Its secondary roots stretch below in the world of men producing action and entangling them in the bondage of action.

15:03

ashvattha-menam suvirood-hamoolam
asanga-shastreNa drud-hena cchittvaa (SBG 15:03)

15:04
tatah padam tat-pari-maar-gitavyam
yasmin-gataa na nivartanti bhooyaha
tameva chaadyam purusham prapadye
yatah pravruttih prasrutaa puraaNee (SBG 15:04)

15:03 -04
For a person involved in worldly life, the actual form of the tree is not visible. He cannot see its origin nor its end. Man should have a goal to seek that highest state from which one does not return to Samsara. He can do so by severing the deep-rooted tree with the strong axe of non-attachment, and by fully surrendering and taking refuge in the Supreme Person from whom this eternal process emerged.
——————————
15:05

dvand-vairvi-muktaaha sukha-duhkha-samjnair-
gacchantya-mood-haaha pada-mavyayam tat (SBG 15:05)

Those who are free from vanity and delusion, are victorious over the evil of attachment, dwell constantly in the Self, have their desires completely turned away, and are freed from the pairs of opposites known as pleasure and pain, will certainly reach the eternal goal.

——————————
15:06
na tad-bhaa-sayate sooryo
na shashaangko na paavakaha
yad-gatvaa na nivartante
taddhaama paramam mama (SBG 15:06)

Neither does the sun, the moon nor fire illumine My Supreme abode. The one who reaches the Highest Abode, never returns to material life.
——————————
15:07
mamai-vaamsho jeeva-loke
jeeva-bhootah sanaatanaha
manah shasht-haa-neendriyaaNi
prakritisthaani karshati (SBG 15:07)

Souls in living beings are an eternal portion of Myself. They are bound by their material nature and draw towards them the five senses and the mind.

——————————

15:08

yacchaa-pyut-kraama-teesh-varaha
gruhee-tvaitaani samyaati

vaayur-gandhaa-nivaa-shayaat (SBG 15:08)

When the soul, which is the master, acquires a body, it takes the mind and the five senses from the body it has left, just as the wind takes different odours along with it.

——————————

15:09
shrotram chakshuh sparshanam cha
rasanam ghraaNa-meva cha
adhisht-haaya manash-chaayam
vishayaanu-pasevate (SBG 15:09)

Making use of the ear, the eye, touch, taste and smell, as well as the mind, the soul in the body, enjoys the objects of the senses.

——————————

15:10

utkraamantam sthitam vaapi
bhunjaanam vaa guNaan-vitam
vimood-haa naanu-pashyanti
pashyanti jnaana-chakshu-shaha (SBG 15:10)

Ignorant people who are bound by the Gunas cannot perceive the soul when it dwells in the body, when it enjoys sense objects, or when it leaves the body. But people with the eye of knowledge can see it.

——————————

15:11

yatanto yoginash-chainam
pashyan-tyaat-manya-vasthitam
yatanto’pyakritaat-maano
nainam pashyan-tya-cheta-saha (SBG 15:11)

Yogis who strive for perfection see Him seated within themselves; however, those who have not gained Self control, and have minds which are not purified, cannot see Him even after striving hard.

15:12

yadaa-ditya-gatam tejo

yacchandra-masi yacchaa-gnau
tattejo viddhi maamakam (SBG 15:12)

The brilliance of the sun which is the source of illumination of the whole world, the radiance of the moon and the brightness of fire, are Mine.

——————————

15:13

dhaara-yaamyaha-mojasaa
pushNaami-chaushadheehi sarvaah
somo bhootvaa rasaat-makaha (SBG 15:13)

Pervading the earth I support all beings by My energy; and by becoming the moon, I nourish all herbs with the juice of life.

——————————

15:14

aham vaishvaanaro bhootvaa
praaNinaam deha-maashritaha
praaNaapaana-samaayuktah
pachaam-yannam chatur-vidham (SBG 15:14)

I am the fire of digestion Vaishvanara associated with the Prana and Apana the incoming and outgoing breaths dwelling in the body of all living beings and I digest the four kinds of food.

——————————

15:15

mattah smrutir-jnaanam-apohanam-cha
vedaish-cha sarvair-ahameva vedyo
vedaanta-krud-veda-videva chaaham (SBG 15:15)

I am seated in the hearts of all beings. Memory, knowledge, and the power of reasoning come from Me. I alone am that which has to be known by all the Vedas; I am the author of the Vedanta, and the knower of the Vedas.

——————————

15:16
dvaavi-mau purushau loke
ksharash-chaakshara eva cha
ksharah sarvaaNi bhootaani
kootastho’kshara uchyate (SBG 15:16)

There are two Purushas namely, Kshar, the perishable, and Akshar, the imperishable. All beings in the material world are perishable. The liberated ones or Kootastha are imperishable.

——————————

15:17
uttamah purushast-vanyah
paramaat-metyu-daahrutaha
yo loka-traya-maavishya
bibhartya-vyaya ishvaraha (SBG 15:17)

But distinct from these is the Supreme Purusha, the Highest Self, or the indestructible Brahman, who pervades the three worlds and sustains all living beings.

——————————

15:18
yasmaat-ksharam-ateeto’ham-
aksharaa-dapi chotta-maha
ato’smi loke vede cha
prathitah puru-shotta-maha (SBG 15:18)

Since I transcend the perishable world of matter and am even higher than the imperishable soul, I am celebrated in the Vedas as the highest Purusha.

——————————

15:19
yo maamevam-asammood-ho
jaanaati-purushottamam
sa sarva-vidbhajati maam
sarva-bhaavena bhaarata (SBG 15:19)

The one who knows the truth, is undeluded and knows Me as the Highest Purusha. Such a person worships Me with their whole heart and being, O Arjuna!

——————————

15:20

iti guhya-tamam shaastram
idamuktam mayaa’nagha
etad-buddhvaa buddhimaan syaat
krita-krityash-cha bhaarata (SBG 15:20)

I have taught you this most secret science, O sinless one, Arjuna! Knowing this, makes a person wise and all his duties are fulfilled.

——————————

Hari Om Tat Sat
Iti Srimad Bhagavadgeetaasoopanishatsu Brahmavidyaayaam
Yogashaastre Sri Krishnaarjunasamvaade
Purushottamayogo Naama Panchadasho’dhyaayaha

Thus ends the fifteenth part of the Bhagavad Gita
“ The Yoga of The Supreme Spirit”
-The Science of the Eternal, the Scripture of Yoga,
the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna.
